Civics Education

You are cordially invited to a discussion of Civic Education in MD on Thursday January 16, at 6 p.m.

(5:15 if you would like to purchase snacks, dinner of a beverage of your choice.  We are meeting in the Boardwalk room at Bulls & Bears)

League members across the state spent a year surveying public school districts and community leaders to gain a better understanding on the nature of civic education in our state. The findings will be shared along with a discussion of how LWVMD might support efforts to strengthen civic engagement and informed voting.

The Civic Education Fact Sheet is the culmination of this two-year study. It reviewed Civic Education as taught in Maryland public schools including: Role of the state Dept of Education; local school administrators and teachers, and students in the classroom.

The LWVMD Civic Education Study committee plans to share the responses with all Maryland Leagues to continue the discussion we've begun toward support for more civic engagement and participation among our students and younger voters, as well as ways to improve communication about Civic Education so come and participate!

Questions we will address include:

  1. Is there a role for the LWVMD to promote civic awareness and increase voter participation, civic action and civil discourse among younger citizens?
  2. How can LWVMD “assist in improving communication about Civic Education”?
  3. Which ONE (or more) of the actions discussed today would you commit to acting on?
